FILM 1925. I centrum står Carl, en ingenjör som efter ett mordförsök på fästmön sitter intagen på en mentalklinik. Hans dövstumma hustru är förmögen, och med hennes pengar lanseras ingenjörens senaste uppfinning: talfilmen. Larmar och gör sig till visades i Cannesfestivalens sektion Un certain regard, trots att det är en tv-film.
An engineer is admitted to an asylum after having tried to kill his mistress. Using his wealthy wife's money he introduces his latest invention to the world: talking film. Even though In the Presence of a Clown was made for TV, it was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes film festival.
